Ever wonder how bloggers make money blogging? I was as curious as you when I first started to learn blogging. Well, there are many ways to monetize your blog, and today I’m going to share with you what I’ve discovered so far. Perhaps the list below would give you some fresh ideas in monetizing your blog. Okay, here you go…

1. Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising

Pay Per Click is perhaps the simplest way of generating advertising revenue on your blog as you just need to place a small piece of code to start off, and that’s it. The ads will display on your blog and you get paid when visitors click on it. Check out Google AdsenseChitika, and Bidvertiser for PPC opportunity.

2. Cost Per Thousand (CPM) Advertising

Similar to PPC, but instead of clicks on ads, Cost Per Thousand (CPM) generates revenue from every 1,000 advertisement impressions on your blog. The “M” in CPM represents the roman numeral for 1,000. If CPM rate is $2, that means you earn $2 for every thousand impressions (or page views) of the ads placed on your blog. The more traffic you have, the more income you earn! Google AdsenseChitika, and Tribal Fusion are some of the top CPM advertising networks that you should know.

3. Direct Advertising

While PPC & CPM generate revenue from ads placed on your blog, the ads are probably random and out of your controls as this is done via an intermediary. Direct advertising, on the other hand, allows you to have full controls in what ads to be displayed on your blog. That mean, you make ads space available on your blog and communicate directly with the customers to agree on the terms of the ads to be placed. For instance, the rate of ads, duration, size, and so on.

4. Sell Your Own Product

As blogger is good in creating content, eBook is no doubt the most common product that blogger will sell in their blog. Depending on your preference, some bloggers also convert their eBook into hardcover book for sale.

5. Offer a Service

Other than physical products, if you’ve specific skills that others would be happy to pay, you can offer it as a service on your blog too. Like logo design, articles translation, proofreading, website building, private coaching, to name a few.

6. Sell Membership

Instead of selling your product / service straight from the beginning, you can offer some parts of it as free, and allow customers to subscribe memberships for more in-depth content. This strategy is commonly used as it is getting easier to setup membership site with ready-made WordPress plugins like Paid Membership Pro, S2 Member, WP Members, and so on.

7. Sponsored Blog Posts / Reviews

A sponsored blog post / review is a blog post that published on your blog but paid by others. The post may be written by you or others. If you accept sponsored blog post, in accordance with FTC regulation, you should disclose at the bottom of your blog that “this blog post is sponsored by (advertiser’s brand)” for better clarity to the readers. There are some advertising networks that connect bloggers with advertisers for sponsored posts / reviews like SponsoredReviews and PayPerPost.

8. Email Newsletter

Not all revenue is earned from the blog’s page. Many bloggers earn money by sending regular quality newsletters to their subscribers. While setting up a newsletter subscription will not earn you any dime, it’s the content of your newsletter that drives the subscribers to perform the desired actions. This is very common strategy used by successful bloggers and it is advisable that you start building your email list as soon as you start blogging. MailChimp, GetResponse, and Aweber are the few top email management plugins in the market.

9. Site Flipping

Some bloggers develop blog and sell it for profit. It’s usually done by buying a cheap site or domain name, adding unique design and content, and then sell it on a marketplace. If you’re interested in this strategy, Flippa is one of the leading marketplaces for buying / selling website that you shouldn’t miss.

10. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a form of commission based internet marketing. Blogger sign up for affiliate programs (usually free), promote the products / services, and earn commission if the customer performs the desired action via their unique affiliate links. The action could be in the form of sale (e.g. buying of product) or lead (e.g. signing up of newsletter, free trial etc). Below is the list of popular affiliate marketing programs to get you started:

11. Event Sponsors

This can be done by having an event hosted on your blog, and convince the relevant companies to sponsor the event. Webinar is a good example for this where you can promote the sponsors’ brand name in your seminar over the internet, and in return receive sponsorship fee for that.

12. Job Boards

This is another form of passive income where you can integrate a job board section into your blog. If your visitors are the target audience of the advertisers, they would pay to list a job post on your blog, as simple as that! There are some WordPress plugins available to cater for this function, for instance, WP Job Manager and WPJobBoard.

13. Build a Marketplace

By gathering the buyers and sellers of your niche in a marketplace, you can earn by charging the seller a listing fee or sharing a percentage of their sales through your blog. This idea is similar to Etsy, it has potential to earn big money but it involves a lot more effort to develop. If this option appeals you, there are some off-the-shelf premium WordPress themes from Themeforest that you may consider.

14. Build a Paid Directory

This is similar to a yellow page, but niche oriented. The fee can be per listing or through membership, where advertisers pay to get their businesses listed on your blog. All you need to do is provide a platform to host the directory. Themeforest has a couple of great directory WordPress themes to get you started.

15. Be a Freelance Writer

There are many benefits to be a freelance writer. While earning extra income, you gain exposure to visitors other than your own blog. Being a freelance writer can also strengthen your online presence as you network with different blogs by creating some backlinks to your own blog.
